5 Ways to Achieve a Better Work-Life Balance

Work and life need to be balanced. If you don’t, you will get burned out and you will experience a dramatic decrease in your level of productivity at work. If there is no balance between life and work, you will either become unhappy or unhealthy or both. This will then defeat the purpose of your life and your career as well. Set Your Priorities Straight

Unless someone truly knows his needs, he can never strike a balance between life and work. If you do not make things clear, you will be misjudged and misunderstood all the time. Does your family matter more than your job, or is it the other way around? Whatever your answer to this question is, make sure that it is your own priority and not just what other people say. However, if you want to balance life with work, you must be realistic. For example, you cannot always choose work over health as this may have some drawbacks that you will regret later on.

Respect Your Limits

Achieving work life balance is all about respecting the boundaries that you have previously set for yourself. Even if it will be difficult at first, you need to stick to the limits that you have set and the priorities that you have specified earlier. If you have to go back home by 6:00 p.m. for your baby, then it does not mean that you can decide to do overtime work today. Life and work are just as important as each other.

Know When to Stop

Career and life balance depends on so much wisdom on your part, particularly the wisdom to stop. If your body tells you that you are not anymore happy with your 16-hour work schedule, then it should be time to rethink your priorities. In addition, you should try to instil some discipline in yourself. When you are having dinner, do not carry your cell phone with you.

Learn How to Pace Yourself

A better work life balance should be aimed at providing yourself the healthiest, most productive and happiest life and career that you can possibly have. Thus, there are times that you have to hasten up and sometimes you have to slow down. What you need here is self-awareness. Without this, you will not be able to enjoy the process as much as the results.

Make Time for Downtime

Sometimes, in order to balance life and career, what one needs is mere downtime. When making a schedule for the day or a work schedule, take care not to overload your list of tasks and give yourself some free time. Before you know it, you will not need any more vacation or any more special time with your baby at home because you have already had an intimate 10-minute chat with him over Skype.
